Our School enables students to become professionally qualified in the therapeutic uses of essential oils. This Program is approved by The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA).

These courses are open to all learners. No previous Aromatherapy knowledge or training is required.

Requirements for Aromatherapy Certification:

Course Enrollment and Requirements to become a Certified Professional Aromatherapist:  

Students have up to 1 year to complete the course. To receive your Certification from The Lorrie Hargis International School of Aromatherapy, and be entitled to call yourself a Certified Professional Aromatherapist, all students must:  

  • Successfully complete Level I & II Certified Aromatherapist programs  
  • Successfully complete the course assignments; 10 Case Studies and a fully referenced 8-10 page Research Paper 
  • Successfully complete the School’s final examination
  • Paid the tuition fee in full  

Once you have successfully completed both Certified Professional Aromatherapist programs you will be a graduate of The Lorrie Hargis International School of Aromatherapy. Graduates are entitled to call themselves Certified Aromatherapists and will have the skills, knowledge and understanding to work confidently in all aspects with essential oils.

Choose from one of three levels! 

Level 1: Certified Level Aromatherapist

This level introduces the history of Aromatherapy and profiles the use of 20 essentials oils. It comprises how to use essential oils, create effective blends, safety along with methods of application. Once completed you will receive your Level 1 Certified Aromatherapist Certification.

Level 1 includes:

  • Introduction to the history of Aromatherapy  
  • Profiles of 20 essential oils  
  • Minimum of 5 case studies  
  • Quality of essential oils  
  • Production and methods of extraction (distillation, cold pressing/expression, enfleurage, absolute, CO2 extraction)  
  • Basic physiological effects of essential oils: methods of absorption, overview of olfaction and the limbic system, the skin, digestive, lymphatic, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, reproductive, endocrine and immune system  
  • How essential oils interact on physical and emotional levels  
  • Chemistry with contraindications of certain essential oils 
  • How to create/design effective blends 
  • How to write case studies 
  • Diluents such as vegetable oils and other carrier bases  
  • Methods of application (inhalation, diffusion, topical and internal) 
  • Safety issues (including dermal, respiratory and internal)  
  • Legal, ethical, privacy issues

Level 2 - Certified Professional Aromatherapist (Includes Level 1)  

This level builds on Level 1 Certified Aromatherapist by developing your knowledge through profiles of 45 essential oils, blending techniques, use of carrier oils, organic chemistry and botany, consultation and client skills, and how to build a sucessful business. Once completed you will receive your certification as Certified Professional Aromatherapist and be eligible to sit for the ARC (Aromatherapy Registration Council) Exam.  

Level 2 includes EVERYTHING in Level 1 PLUS:

  • History and Modern Development  
  • Profiles of 45 essential oils  
  • Minimum of 10 case studies 
  • Quality of essential oils  
  • Production and methods of extraction (distillation, cold pressing/expression, enfleurage, absolute, CO2 extraction)  
  • Botany- Botanical families, and chemotypes 
  • Organic chemistry  
  • Properties of essential oils within a holistic and professional framework 
  • Anatomy and the body systems with five health challenges per system and formulations for each health challenge with procotoles, essential oils, hydrosols and carrier oils and blends that benefit that health challenge  
  • Psychneuroimmunology (PNI): Demonstrate the use of essential oils to support the mind/body connection.  
  • Blending techniques  
  • Diluents such as vegetable oils and other carrier bases  
  • Methods of application (inhalation, diffusion, topical, optional: internal)  
  • Safety issues (including dermal, respiratory and internal use)  
  • Mindfulness Consultation and client education program design  
  • Business skills for the Aromatherapist – How to Build a Successful Business

Level 3 - Certified Clinical Aromatherapist  (Includes Level 1 & 2)

This level develops an in-depth knowledge of 65 essential oils and teaches Professional Aromatherapists how to find their niche in the field of Aromatherapy while building a successful business and enhancing client based skills. Once completed you will receive your certification as a Certified Clinical Aromatherapist.  

Level 3 includes EVERYTHING IN BOTH Level 1 and Level 2 PLUS: 

  • Profiles of 65 essential oils  
  • Minimum of 20 case studies  
  • Properties of essential oils within a clinical framework  
  • Safety and toxicology of essential oils (topical and internal)  
  • Safety guidelines for vulnerable populations (infants & children, pregnant women, elderly, those with chronic health conditions)  
  • Mindfulness Consultation and client education program design  
  • The Small Print – The Legal and Ethical considerations for the Aromatherapist  
  • Specific tracks are available - Reflexology and Aromatherapy; Flower Essences and Aromatherapy; Emotional Healing with Aromatherapy

They are independent, self-study programs. You will be fully supported in all aspects of each course by the online forum director, Lorrie Hargis RA, and through module coaching calls, webinars and interaction with fellow students on the School’s forum. Full support for the Case Study Assignments and Research Papers will be provided throughout the courses and your assignments reviewed and feedback given.  

These distance learning courses set the standard for online learning. Our digital curriculum contains all the information you will need to become confident and intuitive in the use of Essential Oils for personal use or in your client based business.  

Depending on your own personal or professional needs, the School’s online aromatherapy courses enable you to:  

  • Build your confidence and level of knowledge in the use of essential oils to help yourself, family and friends .  
  • Establish the foundations for building a career in aromatherapy.  
  • Become a qualified and confident practitioner in the therapeutic use of essential oils.
  • Take client case histories and to evaluate with confidence which essential oil is appropriate for your clients.  
  • Qualify as a Registered Aromatherapist (RA) - after successfully sitting the RA examination.  
  • Qualify as a Registered Clinical Aromatherapist – upon successful completion of course, workplace experience and examination. 

Meet Your Instructors:

Lorrie Hargis, RA is an internationally recognised Registered Aromatherapist, Iridologist and Certified Flower Essence Practitioner and Kinesiologist. She has taught all over the world – America, Europe and Asia. Lorrie is currently based in France where she teaches Masters Students at the University of Montpellier. Lorrie has also delivered six month training courses in skin care and perfume product development, registration approval and marketing based on essential oils for interns from universities all over France. She has delivered Aromatherapy courses to students from all over the world and taught Certified Aromatherapy courses at the Aromatherapy Institute and Research in California. She is a published author – "Common Scents – A Practical Guide to Aromatherapy", now in its 2nd edition; "Using Common Scents" and "Essential Detox using Common Scents". Lorrie is a guest speaker at Conferences and Conventions for health and wellness companies and professional Aromatherapy Trade bodies.  

Lorrie has founded two Aromatherapy companies in the USA and France. She has worked in the French perfume, skin care and cosmetic industry using essential oils and natural, organic materials for over 11 years. She researched the ingredients for specific formulations and developed and obtained approval and registration from the European Commission for over 120 entirely new organic products – including perfume, face and body skin care, shampoos and bath and shower gels. She is a consultant for an internationally known natural health and wellness company.  

Lorrie has had her own holistic health practice since 1988, combining her unique understanding of Aromatherapy, Iridology, Kinesiology, Nutrition and Flower Essences to help many people to achieve better health and wellness. She continues to be actively involved in current research and developments and trade regulations for Aromatherapy practice and commerce. She annually attends the Conferences of the International Federation of Essential Oils and Aroma Trades (IFEAT), Phyto’Arom – The International Congress of Aromatherapy and Medicinal Plants held in Grasse, France and The European Federation of Essential Oils. She regularly visits essential oil suppliers in France, Corsica, Sri Lanka, Morocco and Italy. Lorrie was involved with ECOCERT – the controlling and certifying body for the authenticity and traceability of essential oils and all organic products from growers, suppliers to the final end product.

Lorrie stays up to date with current methodologies for delivering online courses and training and has recently completed training in online distance education and marketing. She has practical experience of working in the Aromatherapy Industry, in addition to being a Registered Aromatherapist and Aromatherapy teacher which gives her unique insights into preparing her students to qualify and work as Aromatherapists.

Sue Griffiths is a teacher and university lecturer with 40 years professional experience teaching students of all ages. Sue has taught and given conference presentations in universities and schools in Britain, Europe and the Far East. She has expertise in teaching students with learning differences and in designing and managing curriculum programmes at all levels. Sue is a good listener and has a friendly and knowledgeable approach to working with students. Her style is to treat each student as a unique individual. Her sense of humour and excellent communication skills make her a good teacher to accompany you on your learning journey. Sue’s mission is to enable students of all ages and abilities to achieve their full learning potential and to support them every step of the way with kindness and understanding.
